Abstract:

Objective

To explore the causes of intrauterine fetal death in pregnancy women with advanced age.

Methods

Clinical data of 339 intrauterine fetal deaths (single fetus) were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were admitted to the obstetrics and gynecology department at The Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2014. According to the age of pregnant woman at deliver, the cases were divided into advanced age group (≥35 years) or and non-advanced age group (20-34 years). The causes of intrauterine fetal deaths were compared between the two groups. Independent sample t test, Chi-square test or Fisher′s exact test were used for statistical analysis.

Results

The incidence of intrauterine fetal death was higher in advanced age group when compared with non-advanced age group [1.66% (61/3 670) vs. 1.10% (278/25 227), χ2=8.670, P=0.003]. There were no significant differences of maternal complications incidences between the two groups (all P vales more than 0.05). The rates of unknown factors of intrauterine fetal death in advanced age group and non-advanced age group were [27.87% (17/61) and 7.55% (21/278) respectively, χ2=20.74, P=0.000].

Conclusion

Pregnancy women with advanced age present a higher risk of intrauterine fetal death than the non-advanced ones, so strengthen the maternal-fetal monitoring of pregnancy women with advanced age.
